Acclaimed far beyond the island, Sri Lanka’s traditional Ayurveda is a holistic medical science based on the careful use of organic herbs.

Dating back 4000 years, Ayurveda is the result of wide spread experience and research across the Indian subcontinent. Sri Lanka’s rich variety of herbs and spices provided fertile ground for ancient sages and locals who gathered them with care and respect. Handed down through generations in traditional chants and ola leaf scripts, Ayurveda grew into a holistic science of life based on herbal healing and natural lifestyle balance.

Ayurveda well being treatments are available in specialist health resorts and hotel spas across the island.

Ayurveda for Well Being, the Holistic Science of Life

Ayurveda is above all a holistic science where body, mind and spirit are treated as part of the whole person. All three work together to maintain well being and achieve the natural balance essential to a long and healthy life.

It’s also a specific science, studying the needs of every individual. Muscles and nerves, metabolism and fluids are the three vital forces which occur in everyone, in different combinations requiring different treatments. This applies to herbal healing, diet, exercise, mental and spiritual activities.

Sri Lanka Traditional Ayurveda, Herbal Healing

Since there is no universal answer, Ayurveda begins with an assessment based on discussion and examination. Sri Lankan therapists determine the influence of vital forces and prescribe herbal remedies to restore the balance. Choosing the right combination of herbs in correct proportions is vital.

Ayurveda herbal healing complements western medicine in life threatening illnesses but works well on its own in less serious issues. From sweet to sour, healing herbs aim to boost the immune system and deal with cause rather than symptom. They are used in small doses and have few side effects.

Natural remedies may include well known ingredients such as ginger, cinnamon, rose petals, marigold and pomegranate seeds or the valuable Sri Lankan bulu, nelli and aralu. They are most effective under the supervision of an experienced doctor.

Ayurveda Massage for Natural Lifestyle Balance

There’s no better treat on a Sri Lankan holiday than an Ayurveda massage in a luxurious spa, surrounded by exotic flowers and herbs, a few steps from the beach. Kneading, tapping, squeezing or stroking, the Ayurveda massage works on marma, or pressure points. Treatments include pouring oil on the forehead, herbal face masks, massage with four hands or feet, Indian head, lymphatic drainage, herbal slimming and deep tissue massage. The choice of technique and essential oils should be discussed with the therapist.

A Sri Lankan Ayurveda massage will detox the body, boost the immune system and restore a natural lifestyle balance between vital forces and body, mind and spirit. Relaxing for a couple of hours after the massage will prolong its beneficial effects.
